At Lowe's this morning: an early model double cab pickup. No camera with me, but here's one, for those who've never seen one. Neat vehicle!

I see slightly later versions of those fairly frequently. Even the latest versions of the VW vans are available in commercial versions.

I had a '65 single cab for 13 years.
The most awesome pickup ever made!
Weighs a ton -- only!
Hauls a ton -- really!
5' x 8-1/2' bed -- free and clear, no wheel arches!
Has that lovely locking storage under the bed.
And -- better than 20 MPG.
What was any American manufacturer making in 1965 that had even one of those features???

When we were coming home on Rt. 81 in PA lst weekend, we saw a 3-car trailer that had one of those Corvair pickups on it. It was also carrying a Corvair Greenbrier (mini-van) and a Corvair Lakewood station wagon.......Three Corvairs!

No picture.....I was driving when the rig passed us at about 65 mph.

I had a '60 Corvair 2-door back in the Dark Ages.

I don't think so, JP.

Fold down the tailgate AND the sides and you have a 5' x 8-1/2' FLAT bed -- forkliftable from any direction.

Note the under-bed storage...

I don't know what those Corvairs were rated for, but I'll bet it wasn't 2000 pounds. That was the rating of all type II VWs. (The weak link in that rating was the brakes -- I worried about stopping that ton a couple of times.)

Don't remember the Corvair mileage, either, but I bet the Volksy's better. The Corvair was undoubtedly faster, though.

I've looked those over. They have the right shape, but they really missed on the function.

The pictures are actually of a plastic model I found on the web. I wish I had some shots of my old one under some of the preposterous loads I made it carry.

Oh I know - though I actually like the corvair too but would LOVE a single or double cab VW. I have always loved the look.

Actually, when I win the lottery, I am going to get a cabover flatbed tow truck, (new) with an LBC sized bed and fold down sides like the VW so that I can use it as a pickumup truck and then fold down the sides to haul cars.

I had a single cab VW that I was stupid enough to
let the owner store for "a little while".Ended up
being over a year.I was promised that I would be
reimbursed for my expenses to haul it to Denver.
I haven't seen a cent since then.Still,it was
a cool vehicle.
