TR4/4A TR4A Center Console Bracket Radio Installation

The upright center bracket of my TR4A (the one below the dash with the heater controls) appears nicely covered with what I assume is a 5 to 10 year old leather or vinyl wrapping from Moss or VB.

There are no visible holes or openings for the radio, though the vinyl is stamped or pressed to show an oblong depression for what would be the face plate of a radio.

When I had this bracket out a few months ago, I couldn't see any evidence that any cut holes existed for the radio beneath the hard foam coating on the back side.

Question: Are there most likely some holes behind that material that I can't see, or is it assumed that the owner will cut completely new openings.

I called Moss and they were uncertain.

thx

I'm pretty sure the aluminum should have a cutout. You might poke a bit with an awl or something, to see if there is metal behind or not. Since the factory supplied a blanking plate, that would support that there was a hole there from the factory.

The aluminum behind the vinyl covering should have a hole for the nose of the radio as well as one for each of the radio shafts. These are often buggered up by presious owners to fit aftermarket radios.

Too bad it's aluminum, if steel this would be easy.

If you have it out you could spritz it with water, put it in the freezer to frost up, then set it in the sun -- the hole (if any) would defrost first.

This shot is the back of mine. You can see the outline of what you describe as "an oblong depression". It's got the cut out ready for a radio. While I've got a period correct NOS Motorola AM, I've not had the burning desire to install. Not the best of photos - done with my flashlight and cell phone camera - but you get the picture.

I have a 1 1/2" x 3 5/8" rectangle that fits the Triumph radio. It's in the basement, if a pict would help. Lotta good it's doing in the basement.

I have had at least four of these things, two from a 4A two from a 250, they all had the holes for the radio. I think they were all originally made with a holes for the radio.

Mine have all been original ones with holes intact in teh aluminum and foam/vinyl covering.

Jay, I am interested in yours. Did you buy a new cover for it and if so, how are they to install?

Scott, I purchased a new cover - then went straight to my upholsterer for him to install.
