Hi I been reading alot of posts about (BTDC) before top dead center and (ATDC) aftertop dead center .When you are standing in front of the car everything to the left of the pointer is BTDC and to the right is ATDC. I have my 73 TR 16 degrees ATDC sound righr?
 
Nope. Never more than 4 ATDC, and that is only with the vacuum retard in action.
 
TR6 damper:
ATDC on left of TDC..there is a hash mark on 4*ATDC and a wider hash mark on the TDC.
 
Sorry about that when the car is at idle around 1000rpm using my craftsman timing light the reading is around 16 BTDC is this ok ?
 
1100 is just about where the centrifugal advance will be starting to kick in..
What's keeping you from idling at 850-900 rpms ?
 
I'm having problems trying to maintain idle at 850--900rpms without the engine starting to stall out
 
It sounds like you may need to look at the timing, carb idle/syncing to get it all dialed in.
 
If the carbs are 73 versions, it may well be the carbs' float chamber vent valve..They were particularly troublesome in 73 where by they would not always open when the engine was idling thereby causing stalling problems.
Only by increasing the rpms and thereby transitioning to the "open throttle" position was the float chamber able to ventillate properly.
The very next year, 1974, the transition was redesigned to a more reliable configuration and remained that way until the end.
If your carb has exactly this type of vent valve, it's a 73 and subject to problems.
