Gas pickup screen

Do any of you remember if the gas pick up line in the tank has a screen to filter out debris? If it does not have one, have you made one for the TR3 series? Out of what?

Vett:

I have recently completely dismantled my 1969ish
TR6 gas tank and fuel delivery lines. All in
pieces sitting on the workbench.

I observed no screen anywhere. Where should it be located?
And is it possible to purchase a new screen?

Your input appreciated.

There should be a "sock" type screen or filter on the end of the pickup or suction line that goes to the fuel pump. I don't know what size the metal line is on the gauge unit that is used as the pickup, but if you measure it, we can probably figure something out. These filters look like a "windsock" used at air fields.

Here is an example:

Brosky, my '74 TR6 has a screen. It sticks up an inch or so in the bottom of the gas tank. It is original to the car.

The 3 does not have a filter but the outlet at the bottonm of the tank sticks up into the tank to keep debris from "falling" into the outlet. Debris collects around the outlet and on the bottom face of the tank. Use an external filter instead; it's much easier to keep clean.

I have a fuel filter in line. It works well, the problem is stuff floating in the tank getting sucked into the tube and pluging the delivery of gas. I keep flushing the tank but it still happens. I will take the tank out this weekend. There is something that floats in there. When the gas gets low, it goes into th fuel line and starves the car. I have to blow out the fuel line and put gas into the car to get it out of the range of the intake. Strange problem.

I had my tank cleaned and coated last year. No filter in it. Nor mention of one in the references I have access to. But none the less, a good idea.

Jerry, sounds like you have cork pieces from the level sender gasket floating around in the tank.

The previous debris I pulled out were silicone. The tank is the one item that I did not redo from the DPO. You pay for your mistakes. I still can't figure out what he used all the silicone on. Might have tried to seal the gas tank inlet hose to the metal tube? What ever it is, the tank is coming out this afternoon, and I am putting in a new tank. Tired of that unreliable feeling every time I drive the car.

I double checked my newly cleaned fuel tank.

No screen and the fuel pipe sits flush with the bottom
of the tank. Any debris or sand will be pulled immediately
into the fuel pipe and on the way to the carbs.

Is this yet another little time bomb DPO Pedro has left
for me?

OR

Should I not worry about these details since I have
installed five (5) new inline fuel filters in my brand
new fuel lines?

thanks as always,

d

I would not worry about anymore filters unless you want to make it an even half dozen.

I have heard of do-it-yourself tank coatings failing to have good adhesion and peeling off in flaky bits.
