Converting a Midget

I need the help of a die hard MG owner. I have a chance at a great buy on a rubber bumper Midget. The only problem is I'm not in love with the looks of the plastic bumpers. How big a job is it to change the them back to chrome? Does it require changing the fenders and hood? Thanks in advance!

Jody -

You might want to post your question over in the Spridget forum. Chances are some of them have done this and can address it for you.

There are a couple folks here who have done this conversion (JP is one). The RB Midget would have to be seriously cheap to make it worth while -- chrome bumper Midgets aren't that expensive to begin with. There is some cutting and welding involved, though I'm not sure exactly how much.

It's not as easy as an MGB. On the front, you unbolt the bumpers, cut off the posts and then I had my body guy fab up brackets which he installed properly as he filled in the air holes on the lower valance. The "signal" holes were also opened up when British Leyland adapted for the rubber bumper - I had the hole closed and beehives put in though I understand you can make the signals fit. An old grille bolts right in but I did replace the 1500 front springs with 1275 springs.

The back on mine had been lightly rear ended so it was an easy choice to replace the valance and the "bumps" under the tailights - these were removed to fit the Rubber bumper. I had the rear spring de-arched an inch as well.

I'm pleased with the results but it is not an easy swap. Here are a couple of pictures to give you an idea

I did a fairly simplified conversion....didn't fill in the front openings or the little space under the rear lights(this was years ago---the car is no longer a street car)

You can see it ~HERE~

And as someone else said, you'll probably get better results if you ask questions on the Spridgets section of BCF.

Now that's what I was looking for. Not sure if I'll go for the Midget, but at least I know what is involved. Thanks!!!!
