While driving in the city today, I passed a strip mall that had about a dozen steet rods parked, an impromptu car show at Applebees's, if you will. Always have an eye out for cool cars when out of the corner of one eye I caught what looked like a couple of MGs. Whoa! Backup. What is an MG doing with a bunch of steet rods? Well, these babies were steet rods, with what was left of early MGB bodies. One had a blown small block Chevy with frame-within-unibody construction and the other had a 4.3 Chevy V6 with fuel injection, functional Lake pipes and, believe it, an MG rearend. Both owners were right out of Mayberry RFD, Copenhagen stuffed cheeks and all. Actually nice guys, very proud of their creations, beautiful body work, but scary horsepower in a couple of LBCs. To prove that they weren't true aficionados of fine British cars, neither had heard of Haggerty or American Collectors Insurance. I invited them to our next car show but they both declined. I kinda think they would have felt out of place. When I told them I too had a British hotrod (triple ZS, bored, aluminum rad, etc.) they warmed up and said they may come anyway.
At least they didn't crush them! I think.
